Happy Leap Day!

In honor of today, I decided to give some fun facts about American Sign Language!

Did you know that...
Just like any language, there is proper etiquette when conversing in sign language?
American Sign Language is made up of not only hand gestures but facial expressions as well?
ASL is said to have originated from the French Sign Language (Langue des Signes Française)?
Just like English, ASL has different dialects and regional terms?

To get more information about American Sigh Language and the Deaf Community, check out the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders at:
http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/pages/asl.aspx

Do any of you know or have any experience with American Sign Language? :) Comment and let me know!!

Stay tuned on Friday for a video! Woo hoo! :)

Hello soon-to-be-signing world! :) Today starts my 30 days of learning and understanding American Sign Language. My purpose is to learn ASL and be able to show my progress via this blog. Think "first year of a language" statements (ask questions, discuss family, talk about food, ect), so nothing too ground breaking or difficult.

I'll also be posting fun facts and some history about ASL, just to mix things up a bit!

If you'd like to keep up with me and learning the signs that I will be practicing, I'll be using mainly "http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/concepts.htm" which breaks down the language into subtopics. I'll be starting with family this week!
